Five facts about the Swahili language

  • Swahili is more correctly known as “Kiswahili”, and is a major language spoken in Eastern Africa.
  • The language was originally the native language of a small tribe living on the coast of present-day Tanzania, but adopted for use during and after the early slave trade as a lingua franca.
  • The language is the offical language of Tanzania and Kenya, but is widely spoken in neighbouring countries, such as Malawi, Uganda, Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.
  • The language is derived from the original Bantu language, but has been substantially modified, especially in terms of vocabulary, by Portuguese, Arabic and English.
  • One Swahili word which has been adopted into the English language is “safari’, which means a journey or travel in that language.
